What is the TCF Canada?

The “Test de connaissance du français” (TCF) Canada is an official French-language test designed for individuals aged 16 and over, regardless of their nationality or first language, who need to demonstrate their French-language proficiency as part of an application for Canadian immigration or Canadian citizenship.

The TCF Canada is specifically designed for candidates applying through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It is recognized by the Canadian authorities for immigration and citizenship procedures. It is administered by France Education internationale (FEI), on behalf of the French Ministry of Education. The certificate issued following the examination is valid for two years from the date of the test.

TCF Tout Public

TCF Tout Public assesses general French. It includes three mandatory multiple-choice components and, depending on the candidate’s objective, additional expression tests. It can be used for academic, professional or personal purposes, including certain higher-education procedures.

TCF IRN

TCF IRN is designed for specific French integration, residence and nationality procedures. It evaluates listening, reading, writing and speaking, and focuses on language ability rather than knowledge of French history or culture.

What does the examination assess?

The examination assesses four skills: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression and oral expression.

Results and certificate

France Education Internationale (FEI) processes the examination results. Candidates receive an official certificate indicating their results for the skills assessed.
